About the Team: The University of Richmond Crew is a co-ed, competitive rowing club. The club practices five times a week, with a hybrid of morning and afternoon practices, and participates in six regattas annually. These regattas take place across the east coast, ranging from Philadelphia, PA to Augusta, GA. Normally, two of these regattas are overnight trips, while the others are day trips around the Virginia and D.C. metro area. During the season, the club utilizes a boathouse 15 minutes away from campus in Shockoe Bottom.
Experience Level: Richmond Crew is open to any students interested in rowing. Club members have ranged from those with no prior rowing experienced to seasoned high school rowers. All that is necessary to join the team is a desire to learn and commitment to the sport.
Governing Body: USRowing is a nonprofit membership organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States. USRowing selects, trains and manages the teams that represent the U.S. in international competition including the world championships, Pan American Games and Olympics. More than 75,000 individuals and 1,200 organizations strong, USRowing serves and promotes the sport on all levels of competition. Our home barn is Haverhill Farm, a wonderful facility that is only twenty minutes away from the University of Richmond campus. Riders have the option of boarding their own horses or riding some of the fantastic school horses Haverhill has to offer.

Experience Level: All experience levels are welcome.
Practice Schedule: Different lessons throughout the week depending on class schedules and level of experience
Practice Facility: Haverhill Farms, 12415 Whisana Lane, Ashland, VA 23005
Coach Information:
- Tracey Harmon, IHSA Trainer: Tracey started riding at the age of 8 and was competing by the age of 12. First on her large pony on the local circuit then moved onto the A circuit with her horses. She competed up through the Junior Jumpers as well as the equation divisions. After graduating high school she took on barn management duties at Swift Creek in Manakin Sabot, which is where she first began teaching riding lessons at the age of 18. In addition to being the barn manager and instructor, she was also a show groom and traveled the circuit from Florida to Canada showing her horses as well. She joined Haverhill in May of 2018 as a barn manager and enjoys caring for all the horses and ponies making sure they are happy and healthy. She is also the University of Richmond’s main coach.
- Carol Straus, Haverhill Owner/Manager: Carol began riding as an adult with her daughter, Jessica, and before owning Haverhill Equestrian boarded locally at both private and show barns. Her experience boarding with other barns allows her to understand her clients’ expectations at Haverhill. Carol’s mission is to provide the type of care and service to her clients that she expects for herself and her own horses. Carol has recently taken up dressage with her new horse, Kensington. Carol is dedicated to her dressage training and was recently invited to participate in a clinic with internationally ranked dressage rider, Catherine Haddad. Kensington had a successful showing and Carol continues to improve her skills.
- Jessica Straus, Scheduler/Trainer: Jessica began riding at eight years old and got her first horse when she was fourteen. She graduated from CNU in May 2008 where she was the Equestrian Team President for two years, and vice president for two years, in addition to being the program assistant for sport clubs. While on the team, Jessica competed on the IHSA circuit (2nd at Regionals, 4th at Zones) and at ANRC. Jessica began her coaching career in the fall of 2013 with Randolph-Macon College’s Equestrian Team. In R-MCET’s second year, and Jessica’s first year of coaching, the team rose from 11th out of 16 teams to 5th out of 17 teams. R-MCET was also High Point College at Towson University and had one rider place first and another fifth for their divisions for the year in the region. Jessica is available for lessons for students that are showing and training rides. She teaches rider effectiveness and equitation skills for both riding and training, and she believes exposure to every discipline helps riding students. While her focus has always been the hunters, she has ridden with an eventing, dressage, jumper, and even a western trainer. Jessica’s extensive and diverse training allows her to bring many different techniques to training horse and rider. In addition to teaching lessons and training, Jessica is a high school science teacher.

Ice Hockey
About the Team: The University of Richmond Ice Hockey Program was born in 2001. Until that year, the University of Richmond had never fielded a competitive hockey team of any level. The Club was formed by Chris Bernard, a sophomore at the time. He had always played hockey at his home in New Jersey, and he missed playing while he was attending school. Bernard soon found out that he was not the only one, and the team was born. Because of a small student body (about 3,000), and the lack of any hockey program at the University, the first team consisted of only 14 players. Bernard’s jersey, #11, was retired on September 24, 2010, during the Spider’s 2010–11 season opener vs. VCU.
Practice Schedule: 1–2 nights a week., Richmond Ice Zone, Skate Nation (address: 636 Johnston Willis Dr, N Chesterfield, VA 23236).
Experience Level: The club hockey team consists of players with advanced skill levels. Most of our players have competed on youth travel teams as well as at the high school Varsity level. With that being said, we do encourage all players to come out and join the team.
Governing Body: The UR Hockey Program is part of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The ACHA has been around for many years and it provides highly competitive college hockey to universities who can’t or won’t support an official NCAA hockey program. Currently, there are three major men’s divisions within the ACHA - Division I, Division II and Division III. Division III is primarily for schools with under 10,000 students, or those schools deemed to be in areas that are not a "hockey hotbed". The Spiders are part of the Southeast Region of Division 3, and play teams from all over the East Coast - including from Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and as far away as Florida. The Spiders are also members of the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference’s elite Colonial Division. This division contains teams that are consistent competitors on the ice, and also adhere to certain standards as a program off the ice.
