Men's Rugby

About the Club

We play teams from all over Virginia and some in North Carolina. The fall semester focuses on standard fifteens rugby. Matches take place every Saturday. First comes an A-side match, which is followed by a B-side match. Because rugby is best learned in real-world situations, anyone who does not play in the A-side match will play in the B-side match. In the spring semester, we focus on sevens rugby. This team is highly selective and travels to tournaments that determine who goes to the National Small College Rugby Organization Tournament in May. Anyone who does not play sevens still plays fifteens matches on weekends. Rugby is a physical sport, but we take a disciplined approach to teaching proper technique in order to promote safety and effectiveness. We have a team trainer at all practices and games to observe help if needed. Players take care of their own and always look for ways to improve their own and teammates’ performance.

Experience Level

The University of Richmond Men’s Rugby Club is a group of students who share a common interest in playing rugby as well as developing teamwork and physical skills.  Practices take place twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday.  Our coaching staff has decades (maybe even centuries) of experience as players and coaches.  All are welcome to join and guaranteed to play no matter their previous experience.  Players are welcoming and share a tight bond created off the field and solidified on the field.

Coach Information

Carl Schmitt, Head Coach

“Rugby is a sport that is tough, physically demanding, fast paced, and non-stop.  More importantly it requires honor and respect for your opponent and the match officials.  He has many favorite things about coaching at UR, but two things stand out.    First, the players, the students. No different than anywhere else, really, but they grow on you, and watching them change from awkward freshmen to young men is, well, really cool.   Secondly, the support that the University gives its Rugby Club is tremendous”
